VR can be intimidating, but we've put together a world-class app that makes it easy, even if it's your first time with this technology. Please use the guide below to get started with headsets that we've sent, or headsets of your own. We prefer Meta Quest 3 headsets, but this will also work on the Meta Quest 2 if you have them.

1. GETTING SET UP

Quick hit list on how to get up and running:
  • Charge headset with USB-c cable and charging brick
  • Power on with the button on the side
  • Launch PLM app on bottom bar or in the library
    • IF PLM is not already installed (on headsets we didn't ship you), you can download it from inside the headset. Just open the store and search 'Polio's Last Mile'. See photos.
  • You DO NOT need the controllers for this experience, ensure that the headset is far away from the controllers or that the batteries have been removed so that they don't interfere with hand tracking

2. SHOWING THE EXPERIENCE TO OTHERS

How to ensure users have a comfortable and enjoyable experience:
  • Read through the user guide shown here
  • Practice going through the experience yourself and putting others into it
  • At your event/showing, ensure that each user has a comfortable chair (swivels encouraged) and adequate space to reach out and rotate as needed (3-4ft circles ideally)
  • A ratio of 1 VR technician to 3/4 seats is usually a good ratio
  • It's good to leave a few headsets as backup for charging/rotating in over the course of your event. A fully charged headset should last around 1.5 hours of heavy rotation of the experience
  • You DO NOT need the controllers for this experience, ensure that the headset is far away from the controllers or that the batteries have been removed so that they don't interfere with hand tracking
✅ Wipe the lenses in between uses when possible (inside and out).
❌ DO NOT Use anything besides the supplied micro fiber lens cloth - especially the disinfectant wipes.
✅ Use a disinfecting wipe on the face cover, headphones and back of the head strap. ✅ Look for makeup as that might require more elbow grease.
❌ Do NOT use disinfectant wipes on the lenses.
Deployment in action. Ensure the user is comfortable and has context around the experience. For MANY it will be their first time doing VR, especially with interactive, mixed reality features as seen in 'Polio's Last Mile'.

Frequently asked questions for PLM deployment

CAN I CHARGE THE HEADSETS OVERNIGHT?
.Yes, the headsets can be plugged in whenever not actively used - this can be overnight or if you have some headsets charging while using the others (i.e. 4 active headsets and 4 charging)
HOW DO I SHOW THE EXPERIENCE TO PEOPLE WEARING GLASSES?
Glasses MOST of the time, will work just fine. If they are a larger, more stylized pair, they may not physically fit inside the headset. We recommend trying with them on, and if it isn't comfortable for the user, then have them take them off and proceed as usual.
HOW DO I GET BACK INTO THE 'POLIO'S LAST MILE' APP?
If the headset shuts off or needs to be reset, your app can be accessed in the app library, the 9 dot button on the menu bar, and then select your specific app version of PLM (generally your event name and PLM).
How should i assist someone with unique hair or headwear?
When in doubt, adjust as needed to make them comfortable in the experience. Sometimes a bun can fit up through the top, or the strap can be angled slightly different for it to work. Discuss with the user that you'll work together to find a way that works for them.
HOW long is the experience?
When all elements are completed, the full run time is ten minutes.
WHERE SHOULD I DIRECT USERS WHO WANT TO CONNECT AND LEARN MORE?
'Polio's Last Mile' was produced and developed by REM5 STUDIOS with a grant by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. To learn more, please direct them to polioslastmile.com and/or hand them one of the square PLM cards if included in your kit.

3. UPDATING YOUR APP

The rundown for how to keep 'Polio's Last Mile' up to date:
1. Connect to Wifi (first part of video)
  • If we shipped you a headset, wifi will most likely NOT be turned on
  • Connect to your wifi in headset, just like you would with other devices using the network name and password

2. Update the app (starts at :20)
  • Uninstall PLM and reinstall (this will include the latest update)
  • These app updates are usually core to the experience, otherwise smaller video updates will automatically download when you launch the app (under 1 minute)
  • REM5 STUDIOS will do their best to email users when a significant update is going out
  • If your headset stays connected to wifi, it may automatically download app updates or system updates
  • Meta may change these procedures on a software level, we will try to do our best to update these tutorials as needed
